Britain s grip on the colonies appeared to have broken down: French troops had occupied the Ohio valley while the Indians in New York had declared the Covenant chain alliance broken. WebDuring the Pequot War (1634–1638), the Algonquian Indians of New England sought an alliance with the Mohawk. The Mohawk refused the alliance, killing the Pequot sachem Sassacus, who had come to them for refuge. In the winter of 1651, the Mohawks attacked to the southeast and overwhelmed Algonquians in the coastal areas.
